Study Context: Constipation is a common gastrointestinal complaint and is estimated that as many as 63 million people in the USA meet the criteria for having chronic functional constipation. Constipation is considered a symptom rather than a disease and can have many causes, although the most frequent causes of chronic constipation are usually considered to be idiopathic (unknown). Even though it is often self treated using OTC medications, the majority of these treatments are ineffective in managing long term chronic constipation.
Study Purpose:
To evaluate and compare the effectiveness of two FDA (Food and Drug Administration) medications for the treatment of chronic constipation. The medication causes softening of the stool and increased intestinal motility, resulting in improved fecal transit through the colon.
